"One effect of present saturation is the production of a characteristic form of

sacrifice and consumption that is ultimately destructive. This form of sacrifice

involves a contradiction between the need to construct images of a future and the

desire to make the middle-class subject’s aspirations invisible because their open

expression makes that subject vulnerable. As when, for instance, the desire to buy

a new car is repressed out of the fear that having it will attract thieves, or the

desire to acquire an expensive education is repressed out of the fear that admit-

ting current deficiencies in education will expose the subject’s deficiencies".
